Lisa - I agree that some of these things work across generations but it is important to remember that most of us are really comfortable selling to Gen X because we have been doing it for a long while now. So things we think are fundamental to selling in general may be more specific to the generation. Only time will tell on that. I will do a post on selling to Millennials (born 1982-200?) soon.

I enjoyed this post and the way it laid out some of the key areas to focus on.
I'm not sure its just generation X that responds to this approach. But Like the points you make especially that people are independent to their company. Thank you

@JimC - That article uses the demographers years for the Baby Boomers. If you look elsewhere on the lifecourse site you will see the years I stated:

http://lifecourse.com/mi/insight/timelines/genera...

and

http://www.lifecourse.com/mi/insight/def/boom-gen...

Those are the years of cohorts with similar attitudes, rather than just raw birthrates. For more on the cycles of generations, see my other blog athttp://www.thegenxfiles.com/start-here/

Your info shows the first time I've seen Baby Boomers' birth years not matching the range of 1946 through 1964.

Look at the birth years in the article from this URL: http://www.lifecourse.com/media/articles/lib/2009...

A few years does make a difference and affects what you can have in common with someone.
